Description |
| The follow-up record to 2007's Matinee shows Penate's growth as a songwriter. Whilst moving away from the indie-rockabilly sound that defined his first album, and towards a more alternative sound inspired by afrobeat and calypso music, Penate still uses the soul-tinged vocals that he has become known for. This musical progression has created a record less poppy than his debut, but certainly more mature. Contains the single 'Tonight's Today.'
Anglo/Spanish singer-songwriter, Jack Penate, arrived in the wake of Jamie T and Lily Allen. Ploughing a similar shambling, indie-skank furrow--utilising ska and reggae rhythms--as Jamie T, Penate was snapped up by XL Recordings after playing several energetic, and well-received gigs in his native London. Penate's breakthrough came with his third single, "Torn On The Platformö, which reached number 7 in the charts on it's release in June 2007. The song, a live favourite, has frequently provoked mass stage invasions at gigs. A feature of gigs that will probably fizzle out as his gigs get bigger...and involve organised security.
