Lu:d are four young men from Oslo: Tian (vocal/songwriter), Markus (guitarist), Vegard (bass guitarist) and Marius (drummer). Since the release of <This is Nighttime>, their debut, in 2006 after signing to the country’s independent label REC90, they have been wildly compared to Radiohead, Coldplay, Keane, Travis and the like. (This album is in fact their only album as after several changes to the band’s line-up, they have now adopted the name Human Heat) However, they do to a certain extent transcend these British rock groups, not by the beauty nor melancholy of their songs, but by a kind of coldness that is uniquely Nordic: like the sunlight in winter’s noon that is both enervating and penetrating beyond any chilliness.
The songs in the album were all written by Tian, and mixed by the band together. In the first song “Were We Situated’, Tian tells with his sobbing voice about how he tried to walk out from “a situation, which I can’t walk out” into “a situation, we knew it would end”. Being afraid that Tian may collapse, the band takes up the song in the midst of sadness, and let the music weeps for him. “Welcome Mandrake” is another beautiful ballad of the album, with its melody and melancholy building up gradually as they would if experienced by a kid who has lost his way. “Lover Over All” exhibits the kind of silence in the middle of an endless quest. The album then turns more introspective: songs like “The Great Intent” and “Suffocate Tomorrow” trigger the remembrance in the mind of a wide-awake soul under the white roof at midnight till the last song “Pentadance” emerges in daybreak. “This is nighttime” is not the nighttime of infinite darkness, but a nighttime as Lorca portrayed: “in the night silvernight, the night so nightly night”
在首隻曲子“Were We Situated…”裏,Tian用他那像是剛哭過的聲音強裝平靜地由“I’m in a situation, which I can’t walk out…”一直唱到 “We’re in a situation, we knew it would end…”,那感傷讓人惻然。
