《Ghosts from the Past》是Barði Jóhannsson自2003年的《Something Wrong》後,以Bang Gang名義推出的第三張專輯。除了在同年和Keren Ann合組二人樂隊Lady & Bird推出同名大碟外,Barði Jóhannsson在這5年裏主要在日本,美國,法國和北歐等地作巡迴演唱及替不同品牌的商品廣告和多套紀錄片作配樂,前者包括Volkswagen,TGV,Citroën,Yves Rocher,Emporio Armani等,後者則如2004年的《And Bjork Of Course和2005年的《Life and Death of Andy Warhol》。
相對於Bang Gang早期的兩張作品,《Ghosts from the Past》有著彌漫在《You》和《Something Wrong》裏那種像是Barði Jóhannsson一個人垂下頭捲坐在深邃的房間中的氣氛。
碟末的<Don’t Feel Ashamed>和<You Won’t Get Out>則分別邀得Keren Ann和M83的Anthony Gonzalez一起創作與和唱。
Bang Gang is the musical ghost of the Icelandic Barði Jóhannsson. He is not only a musician: he is also a producer, a director, a writer, and even a fashion designer.
《Ghosts from the Past》is the third Bang Gang’s full-length album. Since releasing《Something Wrong》and a self-title album with Keren Ann under the name Lady & Bird in 2003, Barði Jóhannsson had mainly been touring the US, Scandinavia, France and Japan, as well as composing music for TV ads (notably Volkswagen, TGV, Citroën, Yves Rocher, Emporio Armani) and documentaries (e.g.《And Bjork Of Course》(2004),《Life and Death of Andy Warhol》(2005)). He also collaborated with the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra in 2006 to make the soundtrack of《Häxan》, a cult film about witchcraft directed by Benjamin Christensen in 1922.
Like Bang Gang’s first 2 albums,《Ghost from the Past》is enclosed with an atmospheric soundscape that is inseparable from Barði’s eccentric personality. With the use of piano, guitar and his hypnotizing voice, he visualizes a reality beginning with 《The World is Gray》. 《Black Parade》 is the most experimental track in the album, in which Barði’s saddening monologue is repeatedly thrashed by the noise of guitar and drum.
《Lost in Wonderland》 is a beautiful post-rock ballad in the middle of the album; however Barði ignores the will of this unreal world to end in such a peaceful moment. No, it is in fact a real world created by an unreal voice: and so he carries it on, with the even more melodic 《Ghosts from the Past》.
The album ends with 《Don’t Feel Ashamed》 and 《You Won’t Get Out》, (with Keren Ann and Anthony Gonzalez from M83 respectively as both the co-writers and backing vocals) but never does the darkness:《Ghosts from the Past》is a dawn without sunrise where the poet is trapped and encounters again and again the ghosts from the past.
