John (with the Magic Cockcrew)
With Jarvis Cocker, the lovers Fred de Fred and Marion Benoist became The Lovers; and with The Lovers, strangers will become lovers.
The Lovers’ reinterpretation of French Pop brings a resurgence of Gainsbourg and Birkin in the 70s, who must envy the young couple its love and lust. As NME said, the music of The Lovers “would make Serge Gainsbourg blush”.
The Lovers released their self-titled debut in 2006, with three Jarvis’s compositions, namely, La Degustation, Fred de Fred and Basque Country.<The Lovers>is the dialogue between Lady Chatterley and Oliver Mellors: with the playful Crik Crak, the quixotic Frog ‘n’ Snail, the debauched French Kiss and the tender Fleue Bleue, the sound of the Lovers is sometimes a blow to your ear, and sometimes a caress of your hair.
If with Jarvis<The Lovers>gives a bitter taste of the first kiss then in their new album <Pardon My French>the couple tries to ease the pain of love with their rolling tongues and shaking bodies. Produced and mixed respectively by the two Grammy Award-winning producers, Gabe Rhodes and Joe Gracey,<Pardon My French>carries on the Decameron to the eleventh day with The Lovers’ unique French accent and electronica: you saw her in the Stag Party, you and her then became Friends, met a funny guy named John (with the Magic Cockcrew). She whispered beside you that night, Teach Me Love, while you were in a slumber. You woke up in the afternoon, and what you could find is only a morning-after emptiness. Staring at the white ceiling you told yourself, “la vie qui vient la vie qui va, la vie la haut la vie la bas”. (La Vie)
Perhaps The Lovers are the Cupid with lingerie, if you are in love they will sublimate your affection into bodily exercise; if you are lonely they will drive you into a spasm, a single moment though, in the long dark night.
